Yoga Class Theme: Change of Perspective



You might have heard the phrase "change your perspective, change your life." But what does this really mean? How can the simple act of shifting our view of the world around us transform our lives?


Let's start by talking about the concept of perspective. Essentially, it refers to the way we see and interpret things around us. It's not just about physical vision, but also the lens through which we view our experiences, emotions, and interactions with others. Perspective is a crucial aspect of mindfulness, as it can influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

The changing of seasons is a perfect example of how perspective can affect our appreciation of the world around us. Take snow, for instance. In the middle of winter, a fresh snowfall can be breathtakingly beautiful. The way it blankets the landscape, the way it sparkles in the sunlight, the way it muffles the sounds of the world - it can be a magical experience. But as spring approaches and the snow begins to melt, it can be harder to appreciate its beauty. It turns into slush, becomes dirty and unappealing, and makes it difficult to navigate sidewalks and roads. Suddenly, that same snow that seemed so enchanting a few weeks ago is a nuisance, something to be avoided and even despised.


This shift in perspective is a great example of how our perceptions can change based on our circumstances. When we're cold, snow can feel like a cozy and comforting aspect of winter. But when the weather starts to warm up and we're ready for spring, it can become an obstacle in our path.


So how can we use this awareness of perspective in our yoga practice? One way is to focus on our physical experience in the present moment. When we're on our mat, we have the opportunity to observe our sensations and our breath, to notice our thoughts and emotions without judgment. By cultivating this awareness, we can start to see our bodies and our surroundings in a new light.


For example, let's say you're practicing yoga on a rainy day. At first, you might feel disappointed that you can't enjoy the sunshine outside. But as you move through your practice, you might start to appreciate the sound of raindrops on the roof, the feeling of dampness in the air, the way your muscles warm up more quickly in the humidity. By shifting your perspective from what you're missing out on to what you're experiencing in the moment, you can transform your practice and your outlook.


Another way to explore perspective in yoga is through balance postures. Balancing requires a combination of physical stability and mental focus, as you try to find equilibrium while maintaining a calm and centered mind. By practicing balance postures, we can become more aware of our physical and mental tendencies - our habits and patterns that influence our perspective. We might notice that we tend to favor one side of the body, or that we get distracted easily when our attention is challenged. By bringing attention to these tendencies, we can work on shifting our perspective and finding new ways of being in the world.


The concept of perspective is a rich and complex one, with many layers to explore. By bringing awareness to our perceptions and opening ourselves up to new ways of seeing, we can transform our experiences and our lives. So the next time you find yourself grumbling about the snow, try to shift your perspective and see what new beauty you can discover. Who knows - you might just find yourself appreciating the slushy sidewalks in a whole new way.
